Weekly goals: Status of last week’s goals, and Goals for the week of August 12

Instead of doing this in two separate posts each week, I’m going to combine my status from last week and what I’m planning for this week.

First, a quote to start the week:

Procrastinating is a vice when it comes to productivity, but it can be a virtue for creativity. - Adam Grant

How did I do for the week of August 5

Must Do

  • Finish the onboarding tasks for the new gig - Sort of. I still have one training module to go through, but I’m stuck in limbo while I wait for account creation and access to the things I need in order to start working.
  • Continue to transcribe/copy all work notes into Logseq - Done. This is now part of my daily workflow.
  • Prep for my two sessions at DevUp on 8/15 - I did some, but I still have more to do.

Should Do

  • Read chapters 9 and 10 in Collaboration Explained - Done! I made it through chapter 11!
  • Continue transcribing my existing Azure study notes into Logseq - I need to come up with a system for doing this because just having it on this list doesn’t seem to be enough.
  • Finish The Power of Who - Done! This was a much better book than I expected!

Could Do

  • Commit some code to GitHub that only lives on my Windows machine. - I’m probably 50% of the way on this one.
  • Schedule something for the Tech Support meeting for September - I didn’t schedule September, BUT I do have a speaker lined up for October!
  • Start working on some data analysis for an upcoming blog post I want to write. - This is just tedious work that I haven’t found the energy to do.

Won’t Do

  • Spend time playing computer games during the work day - This has been easier than expected.

  • I was 33% on my “Must Do” list.
  • I was 66% on my “Should Do” list.
  • I was 0% on my “Could Do” list.
  • I was 100% on my “Won’t Do” list.
  • I had an overall 40% completion rate.

Other Stuff

I finally got some goals put into the system we use at work; two of them focus on community involvement and two of them focus on professional development.

My wife and I completed a project to redo the closet in our bedroom. It’s been a long time coming and we were happy to tear out the previous owners wire shelves and put in a nice system from Ikea. We ended up doing something similar in our daughter’s bedroom.

I also started reorganizing the books in my office. It’s a big task, but one that will reduce the clutter on my desk.

I finished my 44th book of the year with Stephen King’s Fairy Tale. It was a great book, and my 8th King novel this year. I really enjoyed the twists and turns, and while I thought I knew how it was going to end, I was pleasantly surprised.

Finally, my daughter took us to see Hozier in concert at the Schottenstein Center here in Columbus. It was a better than expected show, but still…being an an arena with 20,000 screaming Milennial and GenZ girls and their boyfriends was a lot to take for this old Gen-X’er.

For the week of August 12, 2024

What I’m reading

I’m still reading Collaboration Explained by Jean Tabaka and And There Was Light by Jon Meacham. The Meacham book is slow going only because I keep getting sidetracked with King novels.

Speaking of King novels, I’m starting this one: Mr. Mercedes.

Must Do

  • Prep for my two sessions at DevUp and deliver them both on 8/15

Should Do

  • Attend some awesome sessions at DevUp!
  • Write an extra blog post or two this week as a buffer for the future
  • Submit to Codemash when the CFP opens

Could Do

  • Schedule something for the Tech Support meeting for September
  • Start working on some data analysis for an upcoming blog post I want to write.

Won’t Do

  • Anything stupid at DevUp 🤦‍♂️

Final Thoughts

A question for the week:

Do you have a morning routine that you follow when you sit down at your desk each day?
